Last-gasp Telford defeat leaves a despondent feeling

There was no doubting the feeling among the Shrewsbury A squad after their last-gasp defeat at the hands of Telford A. Despondency. Despair that league points had slipped through their grasp again. And the prospect of having to wait three weeks for the chance to make it right. Not that the visit of runaway league leaders Newport A next time out represents a simple chance to get league points back on the board. The champions-elect currently have a perfect record of eight wins from eight and will no doubt roll into Cromwell’s on March 11 in confident mood, writes Peter Kitchen. But the A team has to find a way…

Battered and bruised – but B team still fighting

Taking on the top teams in division two is proving a significant challenge as Shrewsbury B fight to stay up, captain David Edwards has admitted. The Bs gained a creditable 2.5-2.5 draw against third-placed Oswestry B before running into the Church Streton A juggernaut on the wrong night, being blown away 5-0 as the league leaders fielded their strongest line-up all season, writes Peter Kitchen. Next up is a home match against a Darwinian Knights B side that currently lies second in the division, completing a run of fixtures against the top three. But the Bs lost narrowly in the reverse fixture back in October despite having to default bottom…

C team digs deep to knock rivals off the top of the table

Shrewsbury C have got a taste for upsetting the odds against division three’s big hitters – and they’re aiming to upset the league leaders for the second match in a row when Telford C visit this week. Ben Howells’ side secured a hugely impressive 2-2 draw away to local rivals Darwinian Knights C last time out – some achievement considering the Cs lost the reverse fixture at Cromwell’s 4-0 back in October. That result knocked Darwinian off the top of the table – and the Telford C team that replaced them at the summit are Shrewsbury’s next opponents on Wednesday, writes Peter Kitchen. Captain Howells said he was “absolutely buzzing”…

Congress and rapidplay mark busy start to the year

It may have taken a little while for the league campaign to resume following the festive break – but that didn’t stop some of Shrewsbury Chess Club’s players having a very busy and competitive January. Mark Smith and David Edwards were joined by former club stalwart Francis Best – now based in the Isle of Wight – at Shropshire Chess Congress. And the club’s A and B teams also competed in the latest rounds of Shropshire Rapidplay Chess League, putting in competitive showings, writes Peter Kitchen. The Shrewsbury trio were in a field of more than 100 players at Shropshire Chess Congress, which was held over the opening weekend of…

Contrasting emotions as derby delight followed by a tumble to the bottom

From the ultimate high to a crushing low – it’s been a real rollercoaster of emotions for Shrewsbury A over the past two weeks. A tremendous triumph in the big county town derby against Telepost A breathed fresh life into the A team’s survival bid – only for a heavy 4-1 defeat in the bottom-of-the-table clash away at Oswestry A to send them back to the foot of the table. But with just one point separating the entire bottom half of the table ahead of the A team’s home clash with Telford A this week, there’s still all to play for in the bid to stay up, writes Peter Kitchen.…

Pirates gobbled up by Jurassic predators

An experimental Shrewsbury Pirates side were convincingly beaten by Jurassic Coast B in their opening fixture of the new 4NCL Online season. Chris Warrilow and Padro Perez Dominguez both lost swiftly with the black pieces as the club’s opponents – quite fittingly given their coastal moniker – proved to have the measure of the Pirates from an early stage, writes Peter Kitchen. The experienced Tony Purser pulled one back with a victory that showed the value of true perseverance on board three. He spent much of the game down in material only to turn the tables by winning a piece in the ending and smoothly converting. However, Patrick Fitch was…

Beard looking sharp despite defeat at hands of juniors

Richard Beard’s maiden competitive win was not enough to stop Shrewsbury C opening 2026 with a 3-1 defeat at home to Darwinian Knights Junior. Beard broke his duck by defeating Isaac Wilderspin on board four – but it proved only a consolation as a sharp Darwinian outfit cleaned up on the remaining boards, writes Peter Kitchen. The result leaves the Cs sixth in the eight-team table and frustratingly cut adrift of the mid-table pack as captain Ben Howells seeks a top-half finish for his side. The Cs – who despite being the “home” team travelled across town to play at the venue of the junior team as per league rules…

C team loving every moment of division three adventure

Ever since their adventure started at Telford back in September, the players of Shrewsbury C don’t seem to have stopped smiling. Even though that opening Shropshire Chess League division three encounter ended in a 3.5-0.5 loss to Telford C – the first of three straight defeats – the enthusiasm of the squad hasn’t waned, writes Peter Kitchen. It has paid off in spades. A 2.5-1.5 win over Newport Knights in November was their first win at the fourth attempt, and the Cs have followed that up with draws against Newport Junior C and Darwinian Knights D to sit sixth in the eight-team division. It represents a decent start considering none…

Victories sought as A team aims to stop history repeating itself

The equation sounds very simple for Shrewsbury A – start winning! Dan Lockett’s side lie second bottom of the Shropshire Chess League division one table going into 2026 with just one win from their six league matches so far. That came on the opening day against fellow strugglers Oswestry A, but was followed by a four-match losing streak which was ended by a 2.5-2.5 draw with Darwinian Knights As before the festive break, writes Peter Kitchen. Rather more worryingly for the As, the current campaign has followed a worrying pattern set during the 2024/25 season – namely a lack of winning games of chess. Shrewsbury struggled to win boards during…

Edwards the Eagle soars to online Christmas triumph.

DAVID Edwards proved consistency was king when he romped to victory in the club’s inaugural online Christmas blitz competition, which saw 16 club members battle it out across two hours and 63 wild games of speed-chess (time control: 5 minutes with a 5 second increment), writes Tom Maiden. The 11th December tournament, organised by Edwards, was run on Lichess.org as an arena – a format which eschews a fixed number of rounds in favour of a fixed duration within which as many games as possible are played. Every won game earned the victor two points, draws were worth one, and losses nothing. However, three or more back-to-back wins would double…
