Standing room only as social night hailed a success
Shrewsbury Chess Club’s first designated “social night” has been declared a massive success after more than 20 people crammed into the club’s playing room at Cromwell’s.

Club stalwarts and recently signed-up members were among those who attended Wednesday’s event, which was aimed at helping to get all players get to know a bit more about the club and each other following an influx of new faces throughout 2025, writes Peter Kitchen.

Among those to attend were a couple of players who tried the club out in the spring and made a post-summer return.
It comes as it was revealed the club championship has already attracted 16 members and promises to be, in club stalwart Mark Smith’s words, “the best one we’ve ever held”.
The high turnout was particularly encouraging considering the event was only officially advertised a little over 24 hours in advance – and the playing room was so busy that it was difficult to fit boards on tables and some members had to stand.

After a relatively brief talk from club secretary Peter Kitchen and Smith about the club’s recent history and how the club has got to where it is today, a few members shared how they came to play the game and why they enjoy it. Then a few games of chess broke out and people continued to share stories and experiences throughout the night.
A delighted Kitchen said: “A club is nothing without its members, and the social night has warmed the heart of so many. We are so grateful to everyone who came – if ever we needed proof that our club is thriving, this is it!

“What is really encouraging is that we have a healthy mix of experienced players, people who are new to the game and those returning after several years away – not to mention some young blood who are turning up enthusiastically with increasing regularity!
“The future looks truly bright and we can’t wait to see where it takes us. And we weren’t so sure of that just a few years ago when things looked very different to say the least.”
Among the events planned over the coming months include a Christmas meal for members, while the club is also set to host the first round of fixtures in division one of Shropshire Rapidplay Chess League on November 26.
A Team captain Dan Lockett has taken on the running of this season’s club championship, which will retain its popular five-round Swiss format. Anyone interested in taking part is encouraged to contact Dan or email Daniel_lockett@hotmail.com
The club meets at Cromwell’s Tap House in Dogpole every Wednesday from 7.30pm. People of all ages and abilities are welcome – if you are interested, turn up at a social night or get in touch through our Facebook page or by emailing club secretary Peter Kitchen on peterkitchen83@gmail.com
